Which is better?
Renting vs owning: Which is better?
A great place to start: Look at the dollars-and-cents comparison of the bosts and benefits of each.
A monthly rent payment goes into your landlord's pocket. After 5 years of paying rent, your wallet is thousands of dollars lighter and you don't have much to show for it.
A monthly payment goes to your lender and reduced your loan balance. After 5 years, if the value of your home has grown higher, you get something you never see as a renter: home equity. Another bonus: tax benefits you don't get as a renter.
The questions is whether you want to pay to borrow something or pay to own something.
